"Melbourne has more live music venues per capita than any other city in the world" - Melbourne Live Music Census

According to the Melbourne Live Music Census report, there are more live music venues per capita than any other city in the world. The study came to a conclusion that there is one live music venue for every 9503 residents. That surely makes Melbourne the 'Live Music Capital' on per capita basis.
If we compare, London has 245 venues, that is, one venue per 34,350 residents. New York has 453 venues, that is, one venue per 18,554 residents. Los Angeles has 510 venues, that is, one venue per 19,607 residents.
Also, as seen through the data, the live music events have more audience than AFL, Spring Racing Carnival, A League, Basketball, Netball, NRL, Cricket and the Australian Grand Prix combined.

“While the number of regular gigs is about the same, we’ve bucked global trends of a declining live music scene. The number of gigs and audiences are growing, as well as the number of part-time live music venues, which is consistent with the popularity of live music at non-traditional venues, such as sporting events, and at institutions such as the NGV, the Melbourne Zoo and Melbourne Museum.” - Music Victoria CEO Patrick Donovan [1].
